When the world class giants meet, their chemistry is immeasurable!
The original "Great Jazz Trio" - Hank Jones (p), Ron Carter (b) and Tony Williams (ds) - was formed in the '70s and recorded several albums including the famous "Live at Village Vanguard" series (East Wind). Since then, members have changed except pianist Hank Jones. It now can be said that GJT is the name of the band Hank Jones leads, but only to be applied when other musicians are worth the band name. When you notice the personnel of this album, you will surely understand why this album is under the name of Great Jazz Trio. Of course the pianist and the leader is Hank Jones, but this time he is with Richard Davis on the bass and Elvin Jones on the drums. This is the first album that all three giants got together for the recording. Another interest may be that the Jones brothers (Hank and Elvin) are playing together. In spite of their very long careers in jazz, they made relatively few recordings together.
Although the tunes recorded are well known standards, the chemistry of these great musicians makes each rendition extraordinary. Sophisticated and innovative Hank Jones, solid and imaginative Richard Davis, and rhythmic powerhouse Elvin Jones - check with your own ears how this encounter sounds!

Hank Jones

Born on July 31, 1918 in Vicksburg, Mississippi but raised in Pontiac, Michigan. Eldest of three remarkable brothers in jazz (Thad Jones and Elvin Jones). By the beginning of his teenage years, he played piano professionally in local bands. In 1944 he moved to New York to join the "Hot Lips" Page band. While freelancing with Billy Eckstein, Coleman Hawkins and Howard McGhee, Hank started listening to leading be-bop players, and studied and worked hard to develop an original style embracing the best of the swing and be-bop traditions. In late 1947, Hank joined the Jazz at the Philharmonic crew, and from 1948 to 1953 he became the pianist for Ella Fitzgerald. During this period Hank also made several recordings including historical sessions with Charlie Parker or Lester Young. After several years as a freelance player, Hank joined the staff of CBS records, where he stayed for the next seventeen years. During this period he worked with large studio bands, performing on some of the top radio and TV programs. Since the mid-70s he has continued to work in various jazz contexts, as soloist, as duettist with other pianists, as accompanist to singers and instrumentalists, and as leader of his own small groups.
Hank Jones is regarded today as the father of contemporary Jazz piano, and his influence can be heard in the work of most every Jazz pianist in the world.
