| Diva
sings and swings the various aspects of love. |
Marlena
Shaw is a true original vocalist that captivates audiences
worldwide. Each repertoire on this album describes "love" in
many aspects - about relationships starting and ending, and
about life. Marlena delivers each scene with her soulful, enchanting
and warm interpretation.
For this date, Marlena is accompanied by pianist David Hazeltine,
Jeff Chambers on bass, and drummer Lenny Robinson; percussionist
Saoli Sendo adds for four tunes. Repertoires vary from contemporary
numbers to jazz. Striking, soulful opening tune "Hope
in a Hopeless World," Billy Joel's hit "New York
State of Mind" or Bill Withers' "Just the Two of
Us" blends naturally with standard tunes including "For
All We Know" and "What a Wonderful World" in
the album. One highlight is the new rendition of "Mercy,
Mercy, Mercy," after more than three decades since she
first sang for Cadet. The album closes with the duet by Marlena
and Hazeltine. Emotional, deep and beautiful ballad delivered
from her soul. |

Marlena Shaw
Born September 22, New York. Shaw's first experience singing
before a large audience was with her uncle, who played trumpet
and exposed her to the music of jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie.
At only 10 years old, Shaw performed with her uncle at the
Apollo Theater in Harlem.
By the mid-'60s she was performing regularly for audiences
in the Catskills, Playboy clubs and other New York area clubs.
In 1966, Shaw recorded "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy'' for Cadet
Records, which became a hit single. Her big break was with
Count Basie Orchestra, where she sang with the band for four
years.
In 1972, after leaving the Basie Orchestra, Shaw was the
first female vocalist signed to Blue Note Records. It was
during this period she toured with Sammy Davis Jr. During
both the Basie and Sammy Davis Jr. periods she gained immeasurable
experience and insight.
After favoring soul, R&B and disco in the '70s and early
'80s, Shaw has made jazz as her first priority again. She
is one of the most distinctive and distinguished vocalist
of today's scene. |
